Thankful Friday
Morning, kids. Still having my first cup of coffee. Okay, maybe it’s my third cup, but I’m still not fully awake yet. Been reflecting on the week. I haven’t had much time to write this week, but I have a few minutes this morning and wanted to share my thoughts.
I am so very thankful.
Here’s what I’m thankful for:
1. Good friends. This week has been rough – hell, the last six months have been rough – and I’ve got amazing friends who give me that boost when I need it. And, I wanted to thank Mike Lawson for carrying the weight of the blog this week with all of his awesome posts. And for the IT help. And for the weekly beer and grilled cheese. And his wife, Karen, for allowing me to invite myself over and yell at people in their basement.
2. Good family. My sister has been my Office Manager for the past six months or so, and I owe so much to her. She’s our Collections Officer; she’s Accounts Payable; and she handles purchasing all of the office supplies. Working together has made us closer as sisters, and I’m so lucky to have her.
3. Good beer. Headed to Foster’s tonight to share some beers with some friends. Nothing like swapping stories, teasing Mike Lawson, and drinking some fine brew.
4. Great presentation yesterday. I spoke at Mohegan Sun to a group of financial services professionals. The talk started out as LinkedIn101, but then morphed into a discussion of FINRA rules and compliance difficulties. Great discussion. I love smart, passionate people.
5. Great roommates, both personally and professionally.
a. Personally. I recently moved from Marlborough to East Hampton, one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make. I found a guy on craigslist who was recently divorced, had a large dog, and needed a roommate to afford his house. We rolled the dice and combined households, and it has worked out so well. I got really lucky. Having someone to share in the dog responsibilities and the house chores makes life so much easier.
b. Professionally. My office is in Main
Street Market, in Middletown. We moved from the back of the building to the front of the building a few months ago (yes, two moves at the same time – stressful), and we are so lucky. The landlord is great; the tenants are great; the building is beautiful. MSM functions like a mini-community – Pastry Steve’s shop operates as the watercooler for all of us in the building; Norman at the African Art store signs for packages for me when I’m not around (and he barely knows me); and Tad the Building Manager stops in to check and see how we’re doing.
I’m in the right place, and I’m extremely lucky. Thankful Friday.
WFTB
Great stuff, Diana. It is good to take inventory of our blessings!
2nd with Tim. Good blog!
First of all let me say that I missed Diana this week here on WFTB and judging by the site hits our readers did too. There is a saying that “It takes a village” and being an entrepreneur can be a lonely road. Building a great support system is the key to making your business and personal life work. It isn’t all about the money (but it helps), it is about keeping a balance and it just makes it a lot easier if you have good friends, family and a sense of humor (beer helps too).
When we started this blog neither of us knew the kind of support we would get from people, after all half our articles are about stuff that is not really related to anything. Meeting and connecting with people is now more important than ever. I have been through a bunch of recessions in the past and while this one is the worst financially it is offset by the fact that more of us are coming together to solve the problem. If you have noticed we review a lot of these events such as TweetCrawl and our own little Geek Meet, it is because we think it is important not only to interact online but to go out and meet people.
I am so glad to have Diana as a partner in WFTB and as a friend. I hope everyone that reads this article just reflects a little on where they are and what they want to do to make their life just a little bit better.
Gratitude is the sunshine of a day. When I reflect on what I have in my life, I feel warm, happy and loved!
Thanks for the post, Diana!
Diana wins the WTFB (best website acronym ever) popularity contest. Don’t feel bad, Michael.
Question: with such a nice office over in M-town, why work from the basement? I have a feeling I know the answer, but…
And re: #5 Susan and I know precisely how awesome this one is, though we kicked it up a notch with matrimony, etc. (Guess I’m just an old-fashioned guy. Or maybe just a guy who likes Old Fashion cocktails. BOURBON ACTIVATE!)
Thanks for all the great comments. Right after I posted this blog entry, the proverbial poop hit the air conditioning unit, so I’ve been putting out fires all afternoon. No time to respond to all of your comments now, but you guys have probably motivated some other blog posts in my head.
Edward, good question. The answer is a whole blog post….
Sorry, kids, back to firefighting for me. Just wanted you to know I didn’t forget about you; no time to respond.
Ed I don’t feel bad somebody even suggested that Diana should just write the articles (I am hoping half in jest), but we keep each other motivated. Writing 1 or 2 posts a week is better than 1 every day, and Diana schedule this week was killer so nothing would of gotten up here.
Diana specifically comes over for my Grilled Cheese sandwich and Beer, don’t let her tell you otherwise…
Diana-
It is clear you cherish the important things in life. I love following you and Michael on your adventure here and wish you all the best of luck – you are cranking out some great content!
